Bowel prep

Choose your bowel prep guide

Dr. Kichian uses two different bowel preparations. The one you should take depends on your medical history — please follow the instructions given by our office.

Which one is for me?

Two preps — tailored to your medical history

  • Most patients take Pico-Salax (low-volume, easier to drink).
  • Patients with kidney disease, congestive heart failure, or liver disease take Peglite (electrolyte-balanced, safer for the kidneys and heart).
  • Not sure which prep you were given? Call our office at (613) 728-1795 — do not switch preps on your own.
For most patients

Pico-Salax

The standard prep prescribed for most patients.

Most patients preparing for a colonoscopy with Dr. Kichian are asked to take Pico-Salax (or Purg-Odan). It is a low-volume prep that most people find easier to drink.

For kidney or heart disease

Peglite

The safer prep for patients with kidney or heart disease.

Peglite (or Colyte) is the prep prescribed to patients who cannot safely take Pico-Salax — this includes patients with kidney disease, congestive heart failure, liver disease with ascites, pregnancy, or a prior colectomy. It is a higher-volume prep (4 L) but is gentler on the kidneys and heart because it is balanced with electrolytes.

Please follow the prep prescribed by our office.

Pico-Salax can cause fluid shifts and is not safe for patients with kidney disease, congestive heart failure, liver disease with ascites, pregnancy, or a prior colectomy. If any of these apply to you, or if you are unsure which prep is right, contact our office before starting.
