Preparing for Gastroscopy (Upper Endoscopy)
Preparation for gastroscopy is simpler than colonoscopy. Here's what to expect on the day before and morning of your procedure.
1–2 days before
- Continue normal diet unless otherwise instructed
- Review medications with our team (especially blood thinners, diabetes medications, and iron)
- Arrange a responsible adult to drive you home after the procedure
The day before
- Eat a light dinner
- Nothing by mouth after midnight — no food, water, gum, mints, or coffee
Procedure day
- Nothing by mouth for 6 hours prior to your procedure
- Take essential medications with a small sip of water if instructed
- Wear comfortable clothing
- Leave valuables at home; plan to spend 1–2 hours at the facility total
Please contact us if you have questions about your medications or if anything changes in your health before the procedure.
