Preparing for Gastroscopy (Upper Endoscopy)

Preparation for gastroscopy is simpler than colonoscopy. Here's what to expect on the day before and morning of your procedure.

1–2 days before

  • Continue normal diet unless otherwise instructed
  • Review medications with our team (especially blood thinners, diabetes medications, and iron)
  • Arrange a responsible adult to drive you home after the procedure

The day before

  • Eat a light dinner
  • Nothing by mouth after midnight — no food, water, gum, mints, or coffee

Procedure day

  • Nothing by mouth for 6 hours prior to your procedure
  • Take essential medications with a small sip of water if instructed
  • Wear comfortable clothing
  • Leave valuables at home; plan to spend 1–2 hours at the facility total

Please contact us if you have questions about your medications or if anything changes in your health before the procedure.
