Overview
Gastroscopy — also called upper endoscopy or EGD — uses a thin flexible scope to inspect the lining of the esophagus, stomach, and the first portion of the small intestine. It is the most reliable way to diagnose acid-reflux related damage, Helicobacter pylori infection, ulcers, celiac disease, and Barrett's esophagus. Tissue samples (biopsies) can be taken painlessly during the procedure to confirm a diagnosis.
